At Sioufi Urology Clinic, we are committed to providing state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment options for disorders affecting the genitourinary system.
One of the specialized services we offer is MRI fusion-guided prostate biopsy, an innovative approach to diagnosing prostate abnormalities with greater accuracy . Dr. Sioufi, our board certified urologist with over 25 years of experience, leads our team in performing this advanced diagnostic procedure.
What is MRI fusion-guided transrectal and transperineal biopsy?
MRI fusion-guided biopsy is a hybrid imaging technique that combines the high-definition imaging capabilities of MRI with the real-time guidance of MRI. ultrasound. This procedure offers a more precise and targeted approach to harvesting tissue from areas of the prostate suspected of being abnormal. It is particularly useful for patients who have:
High levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA)
Abnormal results during a digital rectal exam (DRE)
History of inconclusive traditional biopsies but continued concerns for transrectal cancer
Transrectal:
Dr. Sioufi was trained in fusion-guided biopsy targeted on MRI and is one of the first in Quebec to use this specialized technique. With this method, targeted lesions are biopsied and harvested through the anesthetized rectum.
Transperineal:
With this method, patient comfort is improved and there is less risk of infection. Dr. Sioufi has a better ability to reach the targeted lesion of the prostate through the anesthetized perineum. Sioufi Urologie is the only private clinic in Quebec to perform transperineal biopsies using the KOELIS fusion system.
How the procedure is carried out:
Preparation : MRI images of the prostate are downloaded to a computer connected to the ultrasound machine.
Mapping: These images are mapped by Dr Sioufi or the radiologist in charge.
Biopsy : An ultrasound probe is inserted into the patient's rectum to visualize the prostate. Guided by MRI and ultrasound images, a spring-loaded needle biopsy device is used to extract tissue samples.
Anesthesia : Local anesthesia is administered to minimize discomfort during the procedure.
What to expect in the results:
Normal : No signs of infection or cancer are seen in prostate tissue samples.
Abnormal : Abnormalities such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), tuberculosis, or lymphoma could be identified. If cancer cells are found, a Gleason score will be assigned to assess the aggressiveness of the cancer.
Risks and postoperative care:
Occasional blood in urine, stool, or semen is common but usually resolves within a week or two.
Infections are rare but serious and require immediate attention.
Temporary urinary retention may occur, remedied by a catheter.
Mild bruising of the skin
